Little Sprouts, Big Dreams

Sierra Prothers grew up skiing in New England, but when those mountains were no longer big enough for her, she made her way to the Rocky Mountains, eventually landing here in Wasatch County. Sierra’s travels and outdoor experiences fostered an interest in food sourcing and production; having space to plant a garden was an important factor in looking for a place to live. Sierra shared, “My partner and I found a lovely place in the town of Charleston right on the border of Heber. We were lucky enough to find a piece of property that was large enough that I could start a garden as soon as we moved in.”

Speech

Thank you to everyone who made this event happen tonight, including all of you attending. It is truly inspirational to see our community come together like this.

I am Sierra. I am the owner of Casperville Creations and before I tell you about my farm, I thought I would share with you how farming found me.

I have worked in the ski resort industry for 18 years, the last 14 here in the Park City area. When people ask how I made my way to Utah from New England my typical answer was skiing but what I have realized over the years is that it is more than that, it is our community that has kept me here and it is our community that I feel passionate about giving back to.

I did not go to school for agriculture or horticulture. Farming was not something that I always imagined myself doing, and that is why I say that farming found me.

Growing food and ultimately starting a farm was the combination of many different aspects of my life coming together but ultimately it has been the community that has helped build and sustain what we have created over the years.

Casperville Creations is a community driven biodiverse sustainable market garden. We are located in Heber City and specialize in growing produce, microgreens, and specialty flowers.

Our mission is to cultivate sustainable produce, using biodynamic and regenerative farming practices to provide affordable locally sourced food options to our community.

Our goal is to share the experience of farming with our community by connecting and educating people through our food. Tonight is a great example of that.

We also facilitate a community support agriculture program where members purchase a share annually and in return receive fresh weekly produce throughout the summer months. This program also allows us to donate additional shares to local families in need as well as to the mobile food pharmacy that services both Summit and Wasatch Counties.

We also participate in our local farmers market located in Midway on Saturdays and are so thankful for our Midway and Park City restaurant partnerships who also feel passionate about supporting farmers through sourcing food locally.

I would also like to highlight that at this time we solely operate on volunteers. This has been an amazing outlet for sharing with our community and is a constant motivator to grow more! It is my reminder that what we are doing on our small farm has a much larger impact.

Thank you for coming out tonight and being a part of our amazing community.
